Allowances and Deductions

Your gross salary is your basic pay plus allowances. Some amounts are then deducted before the salary reaches your account.

Dearness Allowance (DA)

A percentage of basic pay, paid at the rate the Bihar government sets for its employees. The rate goes up every few months, so it is the biggest part of your salary growth.

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

Depends on where your school is. Teachers posted in bigger cities get a higher HRA than those in villages and small towns.

Other allowances

Medical allowance and other allowances as allowed for Bihar government employees.

NPS contribution

New state employees are covered by the National Pension System. A share of your basic pay plus DA is deducted every month, and the government adds its own contribution.

Professional tax and income tax

Professional tax and, if your income is high enough, income tax (TDS) are deducted from your salary.

Annual increment

Your basic pay goes up every year by the increment set in the service rules, so DA and HRA go up with it.

BPSC Teacher In-Hand Salary

There is no single in-hand figure, because it depends on the DA rate in force, the HRA for your posting and your deductions. The table shows basic pay plus DA at an example DA rate of 53%, to give you an idea. Add HRA and other allowances, then subtract NPS and taxes, to get your actual take-home pay.

Class levelBasic payDA (example: 53%)Basic + DA
Class 1–5₹25,000₹13,250₹38,250
Class 6–8₹28,000₹14,840₹42,840
Class 9–10₹31,000₹16,430₹47,430
Class 11–12₹32,000₹16,960₹48,960

This is an illustration, not an official salary slip. Your actual figures depend on the government orders in force when you join.

Probation, Promotion and Transfer

What happens to your job and salary after you join.

Probation

New teachers first serve a probation period. Once it is complete and confirmed, you become a regular teacher in the cadre.

Salary growth

Pay rises through yearly increments and DA revisions, so your salary keeps growing even without a promotion.

Promotion

With experience and the required qualifications, teachers can move to higher posts such as head teacher or headmaster, following the rules of the Education Department.

Transfer

BPSC teachers are state employees, so transfers follow the Bihar Education Department’s transfer policy.

State employee status

Unlike the old contract system, you are a government employee with service rules, leave and other state benefits.

Moving up a level

A teacher who wants a higher basic pay (for example, from Class 1–5 to Class 11–12) can apply for that level in a later TRE, if eligible. See BPSC TRE eligibility.
